# Assumptions and warnings

> What we filled in because you didn't send it, and what to check before binding. Both point at the exact field.

Most agency systems don't hold every detail a lender needs, such as which fees are refundable or whether a policy is auditable. Rather than refuse to quote, we make a conservative assumption and tell you exactly what it was.

Every assumption and warning has the same shape:

```json theme={null}
{
  "code": "EARNED_ASSUMED",
  "param": "policies[0].taxes_and_fees[2].earned",
  "message": "Not marked; treated as earned (not refunded on cancellation)."
}
```

`param` is the request field it's about, in the same notation as validation errors, so you can show the message next to the right input. To clear an assumption, send the real value and quote again.

## Assumptions

| Code | When | What we assume |
| - | - | - |
| `TAXES_AND_FEES_NOT_PROVIDED` | A policy has no `taxes_and_fees` | The amount financed is the premium only |
| `EARNED_ASSUMED` | A tax or fee has no `earned` | Earned: not refunded if the policy is canceled |
| `AUDITABLE_ASSUMED` | A policy has no `auditable` | Auditable, the conservative choice |
| `MINIMUM_EARNED_FROM_AMOUNT` | You sent `minimum_earned.amount` | We converted it to a rate of the premium, shown in the message and in `policies[].minimum_earned.rate` |
| `AM_BEST_UNVERIFIED` | We couldn't confidently match the carrier to an AM Best rating | `A-`. The policy's `carrier.am_best.source` is `assumed`, and binding needs the rating confirmed |

The quote also shows the result of every assumption. Each policy's `carrier.am_best` carries the `rating` we used and its `source`: `am_best` (matched to our AM Best data) or `assumed` on API quotes. The enum also has `broker` and `document`, used by other channels. Each policy's `minimum_earned.rate` is the rate we priced with.

## Warnings

Warnings don't change the price. They flag something a broker should look at before binding.

| Code | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `VERIFY_MINIMUM_EARNED` | A line that's often fully earned or has a seasonal minimum earned, such as windstorm or builder's risk. Confirm the figure |
| `REVIEW_COVERAGE` | A line flagged for broker review, such as occupational accident |
| `MINIMUM_EARNED_ZERO` | A minimum earned of 0%. Unusual; confirm it |
| `APR_CAP_EXCEEDED` | No option fits under the state's APR limit, so the quote has no options |
| `POLICY_TERM_TOO_SHORT` | The policy period leaves no room for a loan term, so the quote has no options |

For a demo agency, a business rule that would make the deal ineligible appears instead as a warning named `DEMO_BYPASSED_<code>`, so a demonstration always shows options. See [test and live mode](/concepts/test-and-live-mode#demo-agencies).

New codes can appear in both lists. Show the `message` for any code you don't recognize.
